Metal Detectors in Education: A Student-Centred Approach
What do students actually think about metal detectors in their college?
Always An Alternative set out to find out – surveying 1,004 students across City and Hillsborough campuses following a knife-related tragedy and growing national debate over weapon-detection arches in schools.
The results are striking: 6 in 10 students would support metal detectors becoming a permanent fixture, yet nearly half also worry about feeling judged or stigmatised during screening.
This project unpacks what students told us, from the live walk-through trial to the groups who need extra reassurance. It also sets out clear recommendations for any college or educational facility considering rolling out metal detectors.
